Iran Vows to Respond to Airstrike on Consulate
Khamenei Blasts Israel and the West
Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has condemned Israel and the West for the bloody conflict in Gaza, vowing that his country will retaliate against Israel for the airstrike that destroyed its consulate in Damascus.
Khamenei's speech came during the Eid al-Fitr holiday, when millions of Muslims celebrate the end of the holy month of Ramadan. In his address, he accused Israel of "committing a massacre" in Gaza and said that Western countries were complicit in the violence.
Israel's Response
Israel has threatened to respond directly to any Iranian retaliation. An Israeli military spokesman said that the country was "prepared to defend itself against any threat" from Iran.
The Israeli assault and anticipated Iranian retaliation have raised fears of an all-out regional war in the Middle East. The conflict in Gaza has already claimed the lives of more than 2,000 people, the vast majority of them Palestinians.
US Arms to Ukraine
Meanwhile, the United States has transferred thousands of Iranian weapons seized from the Persian Gulf to Ukraine. The weapons include thousands of rifles, machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades, and anti-tank missiles.
The US says that the transfer of weapons is part of its ongoing effort to support Ukraine's defense against Russian aggression. However, Iran has condemned the move, calling it a "provocation."
